This is the account of Katie O’Toole, late of Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, removed from her family by savages on March the 2nd in the year of our Lord 1747.
On the day of a brutal attack on her frontier home, seventeen-year-old Katie O’Toole is saved from certain death by two strange Indians who insist she is the subject of a Holyman’s Vision, destined to bring a great gift to their people. Dismissing this wild story as superstitious nonsense, Katie decides to play along rather than return to her abusive family of Irish immigrants. Only then does she discover that in order to fulfill the Holyman’s Vision, she must first become something they call his “Spirit Keeper”–a step which sends her on an epic journey across a continent unknown to the Western world.
The Spirit Keeper is a great adventure story, an irresistible romance, and a poignant account of the universal struggle for understanding.
Although The Spirit Keeper is not technically a true story, everything in it is historically accurate, and it is, in fact, an absolutely true recounting of the author’s own life. When she was 17, K.B. Laugheed was captivated by Indigenous history, culture, and literature, and she has been happily living in that wonderful world ever since.
A Sequel to The Spirit Keeper?
The Spirit Keeper was originally written as a massive saga more than twice the length of the book currently on the shelf.
For various reasons, it was decided to split that hefty tome in two, the first half of which is The Spirit Keeper in its current form. Is there going to be a Part II? Gosh, I hope so! It’s already written and gathering dust on my shelf. All I need now is a new publisher.
But if you loved Part I–have faith. Sooner or later, I’m sure you’ll have a chance to read the whole story!!
