One of the biggest differences I noticed between my Midwestern world and the Pacific Northwest was bugs. At this time of year, my world is filled with little critters. Bugs are continuously biting me, stinging me, flying into my face, eating my plants, invading my home, circling me, whizzing by me, fascinating me, keeping me company. I am never, ever alone, and, frankly, I find that comforting.
While I don’t enjoy mosquitoes any more than the next guy, I figure they’re just the price I must pay for the companionship of butterflies. I have seen more amazing butterflies this year than I can remember, flitting around me like beautiful flying flowers.
